The number of fixed private and business broadband subscriptions combined totalled more than two million in the 2nd quarter of 2015. The rapid increase in fixed broadband capacity continues.

The number of private broadband subscriptions with fixed access in Norway, including Svalbard, was 1 867 000 at the end of the 2nd quarter of 2015. Compared to the same quarter last year, this is an increase of 58 000 subscriptions. When the 135 000 business subscriptions are added, the total number of fixed broadband subscriptions is 2 002 000.

The increase in private broadband capacity continues

The average transmission capacity for fixed private broadband has increased from 29.9 to 31.5 Mbit/s since the previous quarter. At the same time, the median value has increased to 22.8 Mbit/s from 21.0 in the previous quarter. One year ago, the average transmission capacity was 23.1 Mbit/s and the median value was 17.8 Mbit/s.

The average transmission capacity for fixed business broadband has increased to 19.1 from 18.2 Mbit/s in the previous quarter. At the same time, the median value increased to 9.5 Mbit/s compared to 8.6 in the previous quarter.

Private broadband subscriptions with a capacity of more than 32 Mbit/s total 34 per cent. Among business broadband subscriptions, 13 per cent have this capacity.

Slow increase in penetration rates

In total, the calculated broadband penetration rate in the 2nd quarter of 2014 is 79.4 per cent, compared to 78.8 per cent in the previous quarter. The figure for private broadband subscriptions per 100 households varies between 86 per cent in the county of Oslo and 69 per cent in the county of Finnmark.

From the 4th quarter of 2014, household figures from 1 January 2014 are used. The general increase in population and households reduces the penetration rate for private broadband by 1.5 percentage points. Additionally, a change in the way students are calculated entails a further reduction of 1.5 percentage points. Unmarried students are also now registered in households at the place they study.
