Large increase in private broadband speed

Average transmission capacity for fixed private broadband has increased from 34.6 Mbit/s to 40.2 Mbit/s since the previous quarter, due to a large increase in the number of very fast broadband subscriptions.

The number of private broadband subscriptions with a capacity greater than 128 Mbit/s has increased from 25 000 in the previous quarter, to more than 81 000 in the 1st quarter of 2016.

A large part of this increase took place in Eastern Norway. The average transmission capacity for private broadband in Oslo increased from 36.4 Mbit/s to 49.1 Mbit/s since the previous quarter.

The median value of private broadband speed showed a more modest growth, from 24.9 Mbit/s in the previous quarter to 25.6 Mbit/s in this quarter.

Rogaland has the fastest broadband

Rogaland still has the highest broadband speed in the country, with 62 per cent of private broadband subscriptions at 32 Mbit/s or higher, and an average transmission capacity of 49.6 Mbit/s.

Finnmark has the lowest share of private broadband subscriptions at 32 Mbit/s or higher, with only 20 per cent.

Business broadband capacity increases

The average transmission capacity for fixed business broadband has increased to 22.9 Mbit/s from 21.6 Mbit/s in the previous quarter. At the same time, the median value increased to 12.0 Mbit/s compared to 11.2 in the previous quarter.

Business broadband subscriptions with a capacity of more than 32 Mbit/s total 16 per cent. Among private broadband subscriptions, 39 per cent have this capacity.

Private broadband coverage grows

The number of private broadband subscriptions with fixed access in Norway, including Svalbard, was 1 914 000 at the end of the 1st quarter of 2016. Compared to the same quarter last year, this is an increase of 61 000 subscriptions.

In total, the calculated broadband penetration rate in the 1st quarter 2016 is 82.6 per cent, compared to 81.1 per cent in the pervious quarter. The figure for private broadband subscriptions per 100 households varies between 90 per cent in the county of Oslo and 70 per cent in the county of Finnmark.

From the 4th quarter of 2014 household figures from 1 January 2014 is used. The general increase in population and households reduces the penetration rate for private broadband by 1.5 percentage points. Additionally, another 1.5 pp reduction is caused by a new way of treating students. Even unmarried students are now registered in households at the place they study.
