2,8 million Internet subscriptions

By the end of the first quarter of 2002 there were almost 2,8 million Internet subscriptions in Norway, about 140 000 business subscriptions and about 2,6 million private. A total of 80 000 of the subscriptions had broadband connections to the Internet by cable, ADSL, etc.

The private market. Subscriptions with broadband, transmission capacity larger than 384 Kbit per second, in relation to the population by county. 1. quarter of 2002. Per cent

This is the first time these statistics are published by Statistics Norway. Therefore it is not possible to show development features. The figures are based on data from the Internet Service Providers. For more information see "About the Statistics".

Oligopoly on the Internet market

The largest Internet Service Providers dominate the market. The Internet Service Providers with at least 100 000 subscriptions provided Internet access to about 90 per cent of the private market. There is also strong market concentration on the business market. The Internet Service Providers with at least 10 000 subscriptions gave Internet access to about 80 per cent of the business market.

Towns have most broadband

Broadband is most widespread in Oslo and other counties with densely populated areas. In this survey broadband is defined as Internet subscriptions with a transmission capacity (rate of speed inn) higher than 384 Kbit per second. There were fewer subscriptions with this transmission capacity in counties with sparsely populated areas. The geographical distribution of broadband is connected with the possibility of taking advantage of technologies like cable, ADSL, etc.

The private market. Share of subscriptions distributed by size of Internet Service providers. 1. quarter of 2002. Per cent

The business market. Share of subscriptions distributed by size of Internet Service providers. 1. quarter of 2002. Per cent

The subscription statistics also include subscriptions that have not been used during the last quarter. There is no direct correspondence between the number of subscriptions and the number of businesses and individuals with access to the Internet. For more information see "About the statistics". These statistics will in a certain time include variables that describe Internet usage. It is an objective to publish numbers on a more detailed regional level.
