Large increase in broadband subscriptions

By the end of 2003 the number of broadband subscriptions in Norway roughly amounted to 347 000 - an increase of almost 123 per cent since the end of 2002.

About 312 000 of these subscriptions are private ones, which represent a 123 per cent increase in 2003. The number of business Internet subscriptions was almost doubled.

Broadband most common in central municipalities

In order to see the correlation between the centrality of the municipalities and the number of broadband subscriptions, it can be useful to classify the municipalities by Statistics Norway's Standard Classification of Municipalities. Clearly, the most central municipalities have most broadband subscriptions relative to the households. The largest percentage increase in 2003 is recorded in the remote municipalities.

While 259 of 434 municipalities had few or no broadband subscriptions by the end of the fourth quarter 2002, this figure had decreased to 164 municipalities by the end of the corresponding quarter of 2003. 120 of the 164 municipalities with few or no broadband subscriptions are classified as remote municipalities.

Both private persons and businesses can have several Internet subscriptions and it is similarly possible for several private persons to use the same subscription. The number of subscriptions is therefore not the same as the number of households/businesses with Internet access. A household can for instance get Internet access through employer, educational institutions or by sharing access with other households. Number of households with Internet access is published in the survey " ICT in the households ".
