More and faster broadband subscriptions

By the end of the third quarter of 2004 the number of broadband subscriptions in Norway roughly amounted to 550 000. This is almost twice as many as at the same time in 2003.

The private market. Broadband subscriptions (transmission capacity larger than 384 kbit/s) in per cent of households. 3rd quarter of 2004. Municipalities

The most common transmission capacity is still the 704 kbit/s, but the number of subscriptions above 1 Mbit/s is constantly increasing. While the number of these subscriptions came to 16 000 by the third quarter of 2004, it had increased to 117 000 by the end of the third quarter of 2004.

The most central municipalities of Norway have most broadband subscriptions relative to the number of households. In most central municipalities the broadband subscriptions in per cent of households were 31, while the number amounted to only 11 per cent in the remote municipalities.

Both private persons and businesses can have several Internet subscriptions and it is similarly possible for several private persons to use the same subscription. The number of subscriptions is therefore not equivalent to the number of households/businesses with Internet access. A household can for instance get Internet access through employer, educational institutions or by sharing access with other households. Number of households with Internet access is published in the survey "ICT in the households", http://www.ssb.no/english/subjects/10/03/ikthus_en/ .
