Reduced growth rate in broadband use

The number of broadband subscriptions was 1 259 000 at the end of the fourth quarter of 2006. This is an increase of 253 000 since the end of the fourth quarter of 2005. Nine out of ten subscribers have a transmission capacity larger than 1 Mbit/s.

Revised figures in tables 1, 3 and 4 are published 23 October 2007. Please use the tables in order to find the correct figures in the article.

Private market. Broadband subscriptions (transmission capacity larger than 128 kbit/s) in per cent of households. 4th quarter 2006. Municipalities

Broadband subscriptions by market. 3rd quarter 2002 - 4th quarter 2006

At the end of the fourth quarter of 2006 Norway had 1 134 000 private broadband subscriptions, an increase of 25 per cent since the fourth quarter of 2005. This is a slightly reduced growth rate compared to 34 per cent the previous quarter.

Central municipalities  682 923 60
1  Standard Classification of Municipalities, 1994 (NOS C 192).

The most central municipalities have the highest number of broadband subscriptions relative to the number of households (60 per cent), while this figure is 43 per cent in the remote municipalities.

From the 4th quarter 2006 onwards information has been collected from all kinds of Internet service providers. This includes the municipality Modalen who provides broadband connections for free to all inhabitants through a special agreement. Included is also the municipality Tranøy who charge a fee from the subscribers. Enterprises owned by the municipalities as well as cooperatives have been included earlier. Whether these units are operating on a commercial basis or not is quite uncertain. The expansion of the basis for the statistics is done to be able to show the real number of subscribers regardless of the legal form of the Internet service provider or whether or not the fee will only cover the cost. Measured at national or county level this change is insignificant. For a few individual municipalities this change is quite significant. The process of expanding the basis of the statistics revealed a number of other local service providers now included. This should contribute to a better quality of the statistics regarding the municipalities.

Individuals and businesses may have several Internet subscriptions and several individuals may use the same subscription. The number of subscriptions is therefore not equivalent to the number of households/businesses with Internet access. A household can for instance get Internet access through employer, educational institutions or by sharing access with other households. The survey " ICT in households ” contains more information about households with Internet.
