Increased profitability in computer activities
The local KAUs within computer and related activities had a turnover of NOK 44 billion in 2004. This was an increase of 11 per cent compared to the previous year and the profitability was improved. The industry employed 34 969 people. For the first time figures for the different services in the industry division are published.
In the period 2001 to 2004 the operating results within computer and related services have constantly improved. From a negative operating result of NOK 4.4 billion in 2001, the local KAUs got a positive operating result of NOK 2.3 billion in 2004. The operating income was still somewhat below the 2001 level.
Increased turnover in consultancy services
Software consultancy and supply had 74 per cent of the turnover and 77 per cent of the employment in the industry division. The turnover amounted to NOK 32.5 billion in 2004, an increase of 10 per cent compared to the previous year.
Larger turnover in enterprises
The structural business statistics for computer and related activities are compiled both on the local KAU level and on the enterprise level. On the enterprise level the turnover amounted to NOK 45.7 billion and 35 067 people were employed in 2004. Figures on the enterprise level will usually deviate somewhat from figures compiled on the local KAU level due to the fact that their enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry than some of the local KAUs.
Software development of NOK 14.6 billion
32 per cent of the turnover in enterprises within computer and related services was generated from development and sale of software in 2004. Resale of software is excluded. When related services like system maintenance services and other software and computer consultancy services are added, the turnover amounted to NOK 23.7 billion, corresponding to 52 per cent of the industry division. Computer facilities management and data processing services had a turnover of NOK 5.8 billion, corresponding to 13 per cent of the industry division. Information about the services is available in "About the statistics".
Revision of industries
The industry division computer and related activities divide the enterprises in six different groups according to value added in different services. Most of the enterprises have activities in several groups, and how much they earn from the different services can vary from one year to the next. This makes the industry placing difficult. A revision of industries in the Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises, has caused large enterprises to be moved to other industry groups, something which influences the figures. The group "data processing" showed a large increase in turnover from 2003 to 2004, but this could largely be attributed to a movement within the division. Thus it did not have an effect on the total figures for computer and related activities.
Employment
The collection method for employment data has been changed. This change makes it difficult to compare employment between 2003 and 2004. More detailed information about this and other definitions used in the structural business statistics for transport and communication is available in "About the statistics".
