The industry group employed 13 546 people, an increase of 1 per cent. Courier activities other than national post activities had a turnover of 1.5 billion NOK and employed 3 473 people in 2002. This was a growth of respectively 11 and 4 per cent compared to the previous year. Positive development for telecommunications

The local KAUs in the telecommunication industry had a negative operating result in 2001. The 2002 figures show a slight positive operating result of 1.6 million NOK. Total value added increased by 22 per cent to 19.7 billion in 2002. Structural business statistics for the subclasses fixed telecommunication carriers, mobile telecommunication carriers, internet service providers and other telecommunication activities are produced for the first time in 2002. Internet service providers and other telecommunication activities had negative operating results in 2002, while mobile telecommunication carriers had the best operating result.

Increase in the investments within post and courier activities

The investments amounted to 448.9 million NOK within national post activities and 16.3 million NOK within courier activities other than national post activities. The investments figures show investments in fixed assets, improvements are added while sales are deducted. The large increase within national post activities in 2002 is caused by a large sale of fixed assets in 2001.

County numbers

A few big companies characterize the industries telecommunication and post activities. Restructurings in these companies will have a considerable influence on the numbers distributed on counties.

The number of enterprises has increased from 2001 to 2002. It is to a large extent due to better register information as a result of the value added tax (VAT) reform. Due to this, enterprises with low turnover that were not included in the statistics previous years, are included in 2002.

Statistics on the enterprise level

The structural business statistics for post and telecommunication activities are compiled both on the local KAU level and on the enterprise level. On the enterprise level the turnover increased by 3 per cent and amounted to 65.9 billion NOK for the post and telecommunication industry in total in 2002. The total number of employees decreased by 3 222 people compared to 2001.

Figures on the enterprise level will usually deviate somewhat from figures compiled on the local KAU level due to the fact that their enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry than some of the local KAUs. More detailed information about this and other definitions used in the structural business statistics for cultural activities is available in "About the statistics".
