Decrease in guest nights

There were fewer guest nights in all types of establishments in September this year compared to September last year. This is the first month this year where we have seen this type of decline.

The accommodation statistics registered 2.7 million guest nights in September this year. This is a decline of 4.1 per cent compared to the same month last year. Hotels has experienced the lowest decline among the accommodation establishments, with 3 per cent, while guest nights at camping sites and holiday dwellings fell by 5.4 and 12 per cent.

Unchanged price per room but lower total sales
During September, there were 2.1 million guest nights at Norwegian hotels. Compared to the same month the year before, both Norwegian and foreign guest nights fell by approximately 3 per cent.
The average price per room in Norway was 987 NOK. This is approximately at the same level as in September the year before, but total sales fell by 2.4 per cent. The fall in total sales can be attributed to the fall in total guest nights at hotels.
The revenue per available room fell by 5.1 per cent to 593 NOK in September. There were some regional differences, where Vestfold and Hordaland had the largest decline, while the counties Møre og Romsdal and Østfold has the largest increase.

Fewer guest nights in camping sites
- 401 000 guest nights in September 2018
- Camper guest nights increased by 30 per cent.
- Norwegian guest nights fell by 3.8 per cent
- Foreign guest nights fell by 11 per cent
Fewer guest nights at holiday dwellings
- 177 000 guest nights
- Norwegian guest nights fell by 18 per cent
- Foreign guest nights fell by 4.1 per cent
- Largest decline in Vest-Agder og Oppland
The figure below shows that approximately one of five guests nights in September were in camping sites or holiday dwellings. In August it was one in three.
