Fewer employed in water transport

Published:

The number of persons employed in the water transport industry division fell by almost 1 120 from the previous year, to 25 189 in 2015.

A dramatic situation in the offshore market in 2015 was part of the reason for this development, as the drop in oil prices and reduced demand led to a massive overcapacity of ships. Several offshore vessels were laid-up and employees were made redundant. The industry group 'sea and coastal freight water transport' had a decline in the number of persons employed by 5.7 per cent from the year before, to 15 387 in 2015. However, the turnover of the entire water industry division remained high in 2015, and amounted to NOK 165.2 billion compared with NOK 155.8 billion in 2014. This might indicate a relatively good coverage of long contracts for the companies.

Good results for air transport

The air transport industry division had a gross operating surplus of NOK 1.6 billion in 2015, compared with NOK 100 million in 2014. Production value of local KAUs increased by 4.3 per cent, to NOK 39.2 billion in 2015. The value added constituted NOK 6.9 billion in 2015, an increase of 13 per cent from the previous year.

Stable rise for land transport

The number of persons employed for the land transport industry division was 73 940 in 2015, equivalent to a rise of 3.8 per cent from 2014. Operating income increased by NOK 798 million, to NOK 86.7 billion in 2015. Value added totalled NOK 39.6 billion in 2015, an increase of 4.4 per cent in the same period. The industry class 'freight transport by road', which is the largest group within land transport, nevertheless had a slight decrease in turnover of 0.8 per cent for the first time since 2009, down to NOK 48.3 billion in 2015.

Good year for warehousing and support activities

Local KAUs in the industry division continued to have a good year in 2015. The production value increased from NOK 97.2 billion in 2014 to NOK 101 billion in the following year. The number of local KAUs was 2 774 in 2015, about the same as the year before.

Growth for postal and courier activities

In 2015, the production value for the industry division amounted to NOK 17.8 billion, an increase of 7.1 per cent from the preceding year. The value added rose by NOK 6 million in the same period, and constituted over NOK 10 billion in 2015.

Continued good growth for transport and storage

In 2015, local KAUs in the industry section 'transport and storage' had total operating income of NOK 405.3 billion, an increase of 4.3 per cent from the previous year. The value added amounted to NOK 151.1 billion, equivalent to a rise of NOK 5.8 billion from 2014. Gross operating surplus increased by 5.4 per cent, to NOK 64.7 billion in the same period. The number of local KAUs was about the same as in 2014, while the number of persons employed increased by 2 740, and ended at 157 520 in 2015.

New data source for employment

From 2015, the Structural Business Statistics are based on a new data basis for wage earners. The main source in the period to 2014 was the NAV Employee Register (State Register). In 2015, the reporting to this registry was coordinated with the reporting of payroll and personnel data to the Tax Administration Authority and Statistics Norway. The common reporting system is called “A-ordning”. “A-ordning” generally provides data with higher quality and accuracy at the individual level, and covers more wage earner conditions than the State Register. In the State Register, employees who work less than four hours per week on average were not included.
