Increased turnover for accommodation and food service activities in 2016

Local kind-of-activity units accounted for NOK 83,5 billion in 2016. This is an increase of nearly NOK 4,5 billion, or 5.6 per cent compared with the previous year.

New local kind-of-activity units increased by 3.4 per cent to nearly 14 500 local kind-of-activity units. Employment for the accommodation and food service activities increased by 5.3 per cent to nearly 122 000 employed in 2015. The value added increased by 5.5 per cent.

Increased turnover, but reduced operating margin for food and beverage service activities

‘Food and beverage service activities’, which dominates the section, increased turnover by 5.8 per cent to nearly 54 billion in 2015. The operating margin was 4.2 per cent in 2016 and 4.8 per cent in 2015. The value added increased by 5.4 per cent, while the employment increased by 5.6 per cent. New local kind-of-activity units increased by 4.2 per cent to 11 000 local kind-of-activity units.

‘Restaurants and mobile food service activities’, which dominates the division ‘food and beverage service activities’, accounted for 40 billion that corresponds to an increase of 7.8 per cent. On the other hand, the operating margin decreased from 4.5 to 3.8 per cent.

Increased turnover and employment for accommodation

Local kind-of-activity units in the division ‘accommodation’ accounted for nearly 30 billion in 2016, an increase by 5.1 per cent from 2015. The employment increased by 4.7 per cent to nearly 37 000. The value added increased by 5.6 per cent, while the operating margin increased from 1.4 to 1.7 per cent.

‘Hotels and similar accommodation’ dominates the division ‘accommodation’. The local kind-of-activity units increased turnover by 4.8 per cent from 2015, and accounted for about 26 billion in 2016. The value added increased by 4.6 per cent and the employment by 4.7 per cent. The operating margin is still low, it was -0.2 per cent in 2016.

New data source for employment

From 2015, the Structural Business Statistics are based on a new data basis for wage earners. The main source in the period to 2014 was the NAV Employee Register (State Register). In 2015, the reporting to this registry was coordinated with the reporting of payroll and personnel data to the Tax Administration Authority and Statistics Norway. The common reporting system is called “A-ordning”. “A-ordning” generally provides data with higher quality and accuracy at the individual level, and covers more wage earner conditions than the State Register. In the State Register, employees who work less than four hours per week on average were not included.
