Mercedes and Volvo last longer
In 2000 the total number of scrapped private cars and vans was 91 379. This was an increase of 3.5 per cent since the previous year. The number of private cars scrapped was 85 837, while the corresponding number for vans was 5 542. Mercedes Benz had the highest average scrapping age of 20.4 years, while Volvo had the second highest with 19.8 years.
The average age of private cars scrapped in 2000 was 17.2 years, which is an increase of 0.2 years since 1999. This is the first increase in the average age since 1995. The corresponding average age for vans in 2000 was 14.5 years, an increase of 0.7 years since 1999.
The total number of vans scrapped in 2000 has shown an increase of 18.6 per cent since 1999. The corresponding increase for private cars was 2.7 per cent. The increase in number of cars scrapped in Sogn og Fjordane since 1999 was 28.5 per cent, while Oslo showed a decrease of 8.7 per cent in the same period.
Volvo, Mercedes and Saab oldest when scrapped
Volvo had the highest share of scrapped cars older than 15 years with 87.0 per cent. Mercedes Benz and Saab followed closely with 86.9 and 86.6 per cent respectively.
In 2000 Akershus had the largest stock of vehicles. This county had 244 657 registered vehicles at the end of 2000. Akershus also had the largest number of scrapped cars in 2000. Compared with the stock of vehicles at the end of the year, Vest-Agder was the county with the highest share of scrapped cars.
The average age of registered private cars in 2000 was 10 years, which is a slight increase from the previous year. Oppland's stock of vehicles was the oldest in 2000, with an average age of 11.5 years. The average age of registered vans in Norway showed a decrease since the previous year, and is now 7.2 years.
Volkswagen had the highest number of registered private cars in Norway in 2000 with a total of 219 424 cars. This was an increase of 4.4 per cent or 9 344 cars since 1999.
