Volkswagen most common private car
A total of 2 121 765 vehicles were licensed in Norway at the end of 2001. Private cars constituted 88 per cent of the stock or 1 871 826 vehicles, while the vans constituted 249 939 vehicles. The average age was 10 years for private cars, and 7 years for vans. Volkswagen is the most common private car on Norwegian roads.
The total stock of vehicles in Norway increased by 1.8 per cent from 2000 to 2001. At the end of 2001 Akershus county had the highest number of vehicles currently licensed, with a total of 256 404 vehicles. This is an increase of 4.8 per cent since last year, the highest increase in Norway. Akershus also had the highest number of vehicles per 1 000 population. The corresponding number for Finnmark was the lowest in Norway, namely 395 vehicles per 1 000 population. The number of vehicles for every thousand Norwegian was 469 vehicles.
105 000 private cars older than 20 years
At the end of 2001 the share of private cars more than 20 years old was 5.6 per cent, while 15.8 per cent were less than four years old. The number of private cars between 12 and 15 years has decreased by 21 per cent since 2000, and in 2001 this share was 15.9 per cent. The corresponding number between 16 and 20 years has, on the other hand, shown an increase of 16 per cent, and is now 20 per cent. Among the vans 30.4 per cent were under four years, while 2.1 per cent were over 20 years old.
Oppland has the oldest stock of private cars
The stock of private cars in Oppland was 11.7 years on average in 2001, which is the highest average age in any county in Norway. This is an increase of 0.2 years from last year. The average age for vans was highest in Nord-Trøndelag with 8.4 years. Oslo had the youngest stock of vehicles in 2001, with an average of just 8.4 years for private cars and 4.6 years for vans.
Volkswagen the dominating private car
At the end of 2001 the dominating make of private car was Volkswagen, with 225 858 cars currently registered. This is an increase of three per cent from last year. Private cars of this make constituted 12.1 per cent of the total stock of vehicles in 2001. The second most common make of private cars in Norway is Toyota, with 196 858 cars or 10.5 per cent of the number of cars currently licensed at the end of 2001.
Toyota was the most common make of van in 2001, with 45 732 vehicles currently licensed. This constitutes 18.3 per cent of the total stock of vans.
