Over 100 000 vehicles scrapped

In 2002 a total of 102 694 private cars or vans were scrapped in Norway. This is an increase of 10 917 cars or 11.9 per cent from the previous year. Ford had the highest number of private cars scrapped, and Mercedes Benz had the highest average age when scrapped.

The average age when scrapped was 17.7 years for private cars, and 15.2 years for vans. This is the highest average age for both private cars and vans since these statistics were first published in 1985.

The number of private cars scrapped increased by 11.4 per cent from 2001. The corresponding increase for vans was 20 per cent.

Oldest in Troms

Private cars in Troms had the highest average age when scrapped, with 18.8 years. Oslo-registered cars had the lowest average age for both private cars and vans, with 16.9 and 13.1 years respectively.

Mercedes highest average age

Last year 15 549 Ford private cars were scrapped. This accounted for 16.2 per cent of all private cars that were scrapped that year. Mercedes Benz had the highest average age when scrapped, with 20.5 years. A total of 92.3 per cent of the scrapped Mercedes private cars were over 15 years old.

Among the vans Toyota was the most common make to scrap last year. Volvo had the highest average age when scrapped with 18.0 years.
