Cars older when scrapped
During 2005 a number of 102 000 cars were scrapped for refund, 6 per cent less than the year before, The average age of the private cars scrapped have never been higher.
In 1996 as many as 220 000 cars were scrapped for refund. This was a record high number and was due to a temporary increased level of the refund. The year after this, the number of cars scrapped had a corresponding fall. Then the number of cars scrapped has climbed to approximately 100 000 per year. During 2005 a total of 102 044 cars were scrapped, of these 95 589 private cars and 6 455 vans.
The average age of private cars when scrapped has risen from 14 to almost 19 years during the period since this statistics were established in 1985. For vans the age has increased from 13 to 16 years. Private cars scrapped in 2005 had an average age of 18.9 years. This is 0.3 years more than the year before. The vans were in average 16 years when scrapped, the same as the two preceding years.
The oldest cars when scrapped were Mercedez Benz. They were 21,8 years at an average. Volvo and Saab also had a life of more than 20 years.
Both for private cars and vans, Ford was the most numerous make to be scrapped. 13.9 per cent of the private cars and 20.6 per cent of the vans scrapped in 2005 were Ford.
