Vehicles discarded against refund, 2006

For the last 8 years the average age of the scrapped private cars has risen and was higher in 2006 than ever registered before. For vans the average age had been 16 for three years before it slipped back to 15,5 last year.

The total number of cars scrapped for refund in 2006 was 105 324. Of these, 98 359 were private cars and 6965 were vans. The number of scrapped cars increased by 2.9 per cent for private cars and 7.9 per cent for vans compared with 2005.

Most Fords scrapped

Ford was the most numerous make to be scrapped as 13 009 Ford private cars and 1 540 Ford vans were delivered to the used car dump. This amounts to 8.2 per cent of all registered Ford private cars and 7.1 per cent of all registered Ford vans.

Opel, Toyota and Volkswagen had also a number of scrapped private cars of more than 10 000, accounting for 7.0, 4.0 and 4.4 per cent, respectively, of all registered private cars of the same make.

Chevrolet - few but old

Chevrolet is the private car with the highest average age at scrapping, when makes that had less than 5000 registered cars in Norway are excluded. The 255 Chevrolet private cars that were scrapped for refund during 2006 had an average age of 24 years.

Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Saab have a lot bigger share of the total number of registered private cars than Chevrolet, and all of them had also an average age of more than 20 years when they were scrapped. Mercedes is at top with 21.9 years.

In evaluating the material, the makes' market share over time should be taken into consideration. It must also be emphasized that the average age of scrapped vehicles of different makes cannot necessarily be used as an estimate of the age of the corresponding vehicles manufactured today.
