Better earnings for taxis in 2011
Total taxi earnings increased by 5 per cent in 2011 relative to 2010. Taxi trips also increased by 3 per cent, while capacity utilisation per kilometre declined by a small margin.
The industry earned revenue of NOK 8 101 million during 2011; 5 per cent higher than the preceding year. The total distance covered during 2011amounted to 589 million kilometres, of which 56.4 per cent was covered with passengers in the vehicle. Total kilometres driven and number of occupied hours has also registered an upward trend with respect to 2010.
A total of 34.4 million taxi trips in 2011 meant, on average, 6.9 trips per capita. An average trip was 9.7 kilometres long and took 24 minutes during the period.
Increase in occupancy rate while passenger kilometres declined
The industry had 33.9 million hours on offer during 2011. Of this, 13.8 million hours were utilised; a 2 per cent increase in relation to 2010. Capacity utilisation per hour; the number of hours occupied as a share of the number of hours on offer, was 40 per cent.
Capacity utilisation measured as a share of passenger kilometres to total kilometres driven, however, declined from 58.3 in 2010 to 56.4 in 2011.
Sluggish growth during the 4th quarter
The industry’s total turnover was growing throughout 2011. Turnover grew by 1 per cent during the fourth quarter relative to the same quarter a year earlier, while taxi trips declined by 4 per cent.
The taxi statistics are based on a nationwide survey carried out quarterly on the taxi business classified by code 49.320, Taxi Operation in SIC07. The survey covers over 90 per cent of the taxi population in the country. The data is then scaled up to population size using a factor. This factor is calculated based on data from the survey and VAT data reported to the Directorate of Taxes. |
