Goods transport performance
The transport work which is performed when a vehicle carries a certain amount of goods over a definite distance.
Cabotage
Loading and unloading take place in the same country but the lorry used is not registered in that country.

Background
-
The purpose is to describe the performances by foreign goods vehicles on transports to, from and inside Norway. The statistics was published in 2009 for the first time, with figures covering the years 2000-2008.
-
The transport business, trade organisations, research institutes and public authorities are the main users.

The Norwegian road goods transport statistics presents domestic and international transport by Norwegian lorries. To create a picture of the total transport to, from, and inside Norway, figures from these two statistics may be seen together.
The statistics on Carriage of goods by lorry across national border showes tonnage carried across the Norwegian border via road. This statistics cover lorries of all nationalities, not only EU/EEA-countries. It is based on data from the external trade statistics which again is based on data from the customs declarations.

Source: Eurostat
The statistics is based on the results from the road freight transport surveys performed in the EU/EEA-countries. This is sample surveys carried out in each of the countries and sample frame and estimation methods may vary from one country to another. The recommendations given by Eurostat on how to perform the survey and estimations are published in the manual Road freight transport methodology . Eurostat has drawn up an overview of the methodological adaptations made by the participating countries: Methodologies used in surveys on road freight transport in member states and candidate countries .
-
Every quarter of the year, Eurostat receives three data files from each participating country. These data files are extracts from the road freight surveys in each of the countries, including specified variables on the vehicles, the journeys and the transport operations. On the basis of this, new data files are assembled into annual data files covering all countries, and these data files are distributed back to the participating countries.
In addition to the national control and revision routines, all data are checked by a comprehensive system of error controls in Eurostat. If errors are detected, the country in question is informed, and new data have to be reported.
No other estimation is being done than summing up of the results from each country.

-
Figures based on observations from less than 10 vehicles are suppressed.
-
The number of countries included in the statistics has varied through the years. See paragraph 3.1. for which figures that are comparable.
Accuracy and reliability
-
Because this statistics is based on road freight surveys performed in all the EU/EEA-countries, sources of errors and uncertainty will vary from one country to another. A documentation of the methodologies used in the specific countries are given in the publication Methodologies used in surveys on road freight transport in member states and candidate countries
In addition to non-response at the point of data collection in each country, it may happen that some countries have failed to report to Eurostat.
