Hotels see increase in business
Norwegian hotels had 1,469 million overnight stays in March 2000, against 1,441 million in March last year. This was an increase of two per cent. Domestic business increased while foreign business declined slightly compared with March 1999.
With the exception of Denmark, all the large foreign markets showed a decline in business. The biggest decline was seen in British guests, although Swedish and Germans guests were also less visible at Norwegian hotels in March. Overnight stays by British guests fell about 17 per cent. On the other hand, Danish business increased two per cent compared with March 1999.
The increase in business from the domestic market was four per cent, from 1,035 million overnight stays in March 1999 to 1,075 million overnight stays in March this year. Easter 1999 took place partly in March, while the whole of Easter 2000 took place in April. Comparisons of hotel business in March 2000 with March 1999 must be undertaken with this in mind.
Decline after 1st quarter
Despite the business increase in March, business so far in 2000 has dropped by one per cent compared with first quarter last year. The reason was the decline in the foreign market, which so far this year has been reduced by four per cent compared with the same period last year. All of the large foreign markets have shown declines to some extent so far this year.
Increased domestic business in March has led to an overall increase of one per cent in domestic business so far in 2000.
Higher capacity
Compared with March last year there has been a certain increase in available capacity, in terms of the number of hotels, beds and rooms.
An increase in the available bed capacity, combined with a similar increase in business caused the hotels' capacity utilization of beds to remain unchanged at 39.8 per cent. On the other hand, the hotels' utilization of room capacity increased, from 52.8 per cent in March 1999 to 53.9 per cent in March this year.
Higher room rates and lodging sales
Average price per room in March this year was NOK 698. Similar figures for March last year was NOK 692. The price increase caused lodging sales to increase from NOK 612 million in March 1999 to NOK 646 million in March 2000.
