Decline for hotels

Norwegian hotels recorded 1,768 million guest nights in June 2000, against 1,838 million in June last year. In terms of percentage, business declined four per cent. Compared with June 1999, both the foreign and the domestic markets declined four per cent.

All the five major foreign markets decreased. Germany had the biggest decline, followed by Great Britain and France. The number of overnight stays by Germans and Britains fell eight per cent compared with June 1999.

Decline this year

The business has dropped three per cent so far in 2000. Both the domestic and the foreign business have declined. All the major foreign markets are down compared with January-June 1999.

Higher capacity

Compared with June last year, the capacity of the Norwegian hospitality industry has increased in terms of the number of hotels, beds and rooms.

Reduced room prices and lodging revenues

The average room rate in June was NOK 674, compared with NOK 677 in June last year. The lodging revenue was reduced from 797 million Norwegian kroner in June 1999 to 748 million Norwegian kroner in June this year.
