Less guest nights at hotels

Norwegian hotels recorded 994 000 guest nights in May 2002, against 1,055 million in May last year. In terms of percentage, business decreased six per cent. Compared with May 2001, the domestic market decreased 4 per cent, and the foreign market decreased 6 per cent.

The major foreign markets decreased in May 2002, except for Germany and Denmark, which increased 10 and 7 per cent respectively, compared with May last year.

Higher capacity

Compared with May 2001, the capacity of the Norwegian hotel industry has increased in terms of beds and rooms. The number of establishments has however decreased.

Increased room prices

The average room rate in May 2002 was NOK 720, compared with NOK 707 in corresponding month 2001. The lodging revenue decreased from 553 million NOK in May 2001 to 504 million NOK in May 2002.
