Less guest nights in January

Norwegian hotels recorded 948 000 guest nights in January 2003, against 1.021 millions in the same month last year. In terms of percentage, business decreased by 7 per cent. Compared with 2002, the foreign market decreased by 14 per cent, and the domestic market decreased by 5 per cent.

Denmark, Sweden, United Kingdom and Germany were the largest foreign markets in January, with almost 75 per cent of the total foreign market. All four decreased.

Stagnation the last years

The total number of January guest nights increased by 38 per cent during the first period of the 1989-1999. From 1999 to 2003 there was first a stagnation and thereafter a decrease.

The number of Norwegian guest nights in January shows a similar development, apart from the growth period lasting to 2002, with a total increase of 48 per cent. From January 2002 to January 2003, there has been a decrease of 5 per cent.

From 1989 to 1995, the number of foreign guest nights in January increased by 50 per cent. Thereafter, there has been a decrease. Further details are given in the figures.

Increased room prices

The average room rate was NOK 705 in January 2003, compared with NOK 698 in the same month last year. The lodging revenue decreased in the same period from NOK 485 000 to NOK 459 000.

Occupancy rates

Compared with January 2002, the occupancy rates both for beds and rooms decreased.
