Number of guest nights increased in May

Norwegian hotels recorded 1.08 million guest nights in May 2003 against 994 000 in May last year. In terms of percentage, business increased by 8 per cent. Compared with May 2002, the domestic market increased by 13 per cent, while the foreign market decreased by 4 per cent.

The two largest foreign markets in May 2003, United Kingdom and Germany, increased by 12 and 2 per cent respectively. Sweden, USA and Denmark all decreased.

Increased number of occupational motivated guest nights

The number of guest nights on occupation and course and conference purposes increased by 21 and 10 per cent respectively, and the number of guest nights on holiday and recreational purposes increased by 2 per cent.

Occupancy rates

Compared with May 2002, the occupancy rates both for beds and rooms increased.

Fewer guest nights so far this year

In spite of increased number of guest nights in May this year, the number of guest nights so far this year has decreased.

Decreased room prices and increased lodging revenue

The average room rate in May was NOK 719 compared with NOK 720 in May last year. The lodging revenue increased from NOK 504 million in May 2002 to NOK 556 million in May 2003.
