Foreign market increased in October

Norwegian hotels recorded 163 000 foreign guest nights in October 2003 - an increase of 2 per cent compared with October 2002. The domestic market decreased by 1 per cent, and the total foreign market also decreased by 1 per cent.

The United Kingdom, the largest foreign market in October this year, increased by 1 per cent. The number of guest nights decreased by 7 per cent from the second largest foreign market, Sweden. The third largest foreign market, Denmark, decreased by 2 per cent. Germany, the largest foreign market on annual basis, was about unchanged. Another large market in October, USA, increased by 11 per cent compared with October last year. USA was the market that increased most.

Occupancy rates

Compared with October 2002, the occupancy rate for rooms was about unchanged while the occupancy rate for beds increased by 0.4 percentage point, from 30.6 in October last year to 31.0 in October this year.

Decreased room prices and lodging revenue

The average room rate in October was NOK 705 compared with NOK 715 in October last year. The lodging revenue decreased from NOK 606 million in October 2002 to NOK 590 million in October 2003.

Decrease so far this year

After the first 10 month this year, in terms of guest nights business has decreased by 4 per cent. The domestic market has decreased by 2 per cent, while the foreign market decreased by 8 per cent.
