Decrease in number of guest nights

Norwegian hotels recorded 15.6 millions guest nights in 2003 - a decrease of 3 per cent compared with 2002. The domestic market decreased by 2 per cent, while the foreign market decreased by 7 per cent.

The total number of guest nights was the lowest since 1996. After an increase during the 1990-ies, an all time high was achieved in 1999. Since 1999 the total number of guest nights has decreased by more than 5 per cent. Most of the decrease came in 2003.

More German guest nights

The largest foreign market Germany increased by 1 per cent compared with 2002. Denmark, the United Kingdom and Sweden, the second, third and fourth largest foreign markets in 2003, all decreased.

Occupancy rates

Compared with 2002, the occupancy rate for rooms decreased by 1.3 percentage points while the occupancy rate for beds increased by 0.8 percentage points.

Increased room prices and decreased lodging revenue

The average room rate in 2003 was NOK 702 compared with NOK 698 in 2002. The lodging revenue decreased from NOK 7.22 billion in 2002 to NOK 7.07 billion in 2003.

Increase in December

The number of guest nights increased by 2 per cent compared with December 2002. The domestic market increased by 3 per cent, while the foreign market increased by 1 per cent.
