Increased administrative expenses

Administrative costs increased by 3.8 per cent from the 1st quarter of 2012 to the 1st quarter of 2013, and is the cost category with the highest annual growth. The total cost index for domestic sea transport in the 1st quarter of 2013 was about the same as a year ago.

The sub-index for capital costs of financing was at 88.8 in the 1st quarter of 2013. This is 19.1 per cent lower than the same quarter in 2012 and 0.1 per cent lower than the 4th quarter of 2012. This sub-index is based on the 3-month nominal NIBOR from the Norges Bank (Norwegian money market rate). The averages for three-month nominal NIBOR were 2.60 and 1.87 per cent in the 1st quarter of 2012 and the 1st quarter of 2013 respectively.

The total cost index for domestic sea transport was at 114.6 in the 1st quarter of 2013; only 0.1 per cent lower than the same period in 2012, and an increase of 0.3 per cent compared to the 4th quarter of 2012.

Fuel had the largest decrease in the sub-index from the previous quarter by 0.6 per cent. Compared to the same period last year, the decline was 6.9 per cent.

Other costs were at 105.6 per cent in the 1st quarter of 2013. This is an increase of 1.3 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Highest cost increase for cruise ships

The sub-index for cruise vessels was at 112.9 in the 1st quarter of 2013. The total cost for this group increased by 0.5 per cent from the same period last year. The sub-index for total costs for tow vessels was at 111.9 in the 1st quarter of 2013.

The base year for the index is 2009.
