Kvitsøy VTS centre monitors traffic from Bømlafjorden in the north to Jærens Rev in the south. The increase in traffic stems from 7 000 extra clearances of passenger vessels but also 1 100 additional clearances of offshore vessels. There were only minor changes in the number of clearances amongst other vessel types. VTS centres Fedje and Horten had about the same activity as in 2011. This brings the total number of vessel clearances in 2012 up 3 per cent from 2011.
100 000 sailings with compulsory pilotage
The number of sailings along the Norwegian coast with compulsory pilotage in 2012 surpassed 100 000. These sailings require a navigator with verifiable knowledge of waters and vessel. There was a slight fall in such sailings for areas belonging to maritime departments Oslofjorden, Skagerrak and Vestlandet, while Rogaland saw an increase of 1 500 from 2011. The pilotage requirement for most of this increase (96 per cent) was met through the navigator’s possession of a pilot exemption certificate. Nordland had the largest increase in sailings with a pilot on board, with 450 more in 2012 than the year before. The number of sailings in Nordland with compulsory pilotage was up 8 per cent in the same period.
Investments dominate growth in expenditure
The Norwegian Coastal Administration spent NOK 724 million on investments in 2012. This is NOK 170 million, 31 per cent, more than in 2011 and makes up most of the growth in total expenditure of NOK 230 million. Transfers totalled NOK 125 million in 2012, which is 16 per cent more than in 2011.
Own production, defined as the sum of wages and cost of purchased goods and services, increased by 2.5 per cent. Contracted man-years went up by 4.3 per cent and ended at 1 077. Wages of NOK 833 million represent NOK 773 000 per man-year.
