Foreign demand down in August

The number of guest nights at Norwegian collective accommodation establishments amounted to 3.55 million in August 2002, an increase of 2 per cent compared with August last year. The domestic demand increased by 5 per cent, while the foreign one decreased by 2 per cent.

Germany, which is the largest foreign market in August, increased by 1 per cent in August 2002, compared with the August last year. Germans stayed more in camping sites.

The Netherlands represents the second largest market in August. The number of guest nights from the Netherlands decreased by 9 per cent compared with August 2001.

The Swedish market amounted to an 11 per cent decrease compared with August last year, while the number of guest nights from the Danish market decreased by 1 per cent. The reason is fewer guest nights at hotels.

The number of guest nights at collective accommodation establishments totalled 19.22 million during the first eight months of 2002, less than 1 per cent more than last year. The number of foreign guest nights went down by 0.6 per cent, while the number of domestic stays increased by 1.4 per cent.

Camping increased

Camping sites had in all 1.50 million guest nights in August, an increase of 10 per cent. Norwegian stays increased by 14 per cent, and the foreign ones increased by 4 per cent.

So far this year the number of stays at camping sites amounted to 6.63 million, an increase of 4 per cent. Compared with the corresponding period last year the number of foreign and domestic guest nights went up by 2 and 5 per cent respectively.

Holiday dwellings increased

The number of guest nights at Norwegian holiday dwellings came to 75 000 in August, an increase of 4 per cent compared with August last year. The domestic marked increased by 12 per cent, while the foreign market was about unchanged.

So far this year the number of guest nights at Norwegian holiday dwellings amounted to 389 000, an increase of 5 per cent from last year. The number of Norwegian guest nights was about unchanged while the foreign market increased by 9 per cent. The increase of demand from Denmark was considerable.

Statistics Norway has changed the presentation of the statistics concerning night stops. In connection with the publishing of statistics concerning camping and holiday dwelling, Statistics Norway presents a complete overview of the commercial night stop traffic. The statistics include hotels, camping sites, holiday dwellings and trades that are members of Hostelling International Norway.
