Small increase in 2002

The number of guest nights at Norwegian collective accommodation establishments increased by 0.2 per cent in 2002, from 24.33 millions in 2001 to 24.38 millions in 2002. The domestic demand increased by 0.6 per cent, while the foreign demand decreased by 0.6 per cent.

The number of guest nights at holiday dwellings and camping sites increased, while the hotels experienced a decrease.

Less German guest nights in 2002

Germany was the largest foreign market in 2002, with nearly 1.7 millions guest nights at all collective accommodation establishments. German guest nights decreased by 1.7 per cent compared with 2001. The decrease was largest in hotels.

The Germans stayed more in camping sites than in hotels. The distribution is shown in the figure.

The number of guest nights from the Danish market amounted to 997 000, a 3 per cent decrease compared with last year. Also the Danes had fewer guest nights at hotels.

About three out of four Danish overnight stays were at hotels. The distribution of the Danish guest nights is shown in the figure.

Most guest nights at hotels

About two out of three overnight stays last year were at hotels. The corresponding figure for December 2002 was 87 per cent.

Camping and holiday dwellings decreased in December

The number of stays at camping sites amounted to 89 000 in December 2002. Compared with the same month 2001, both the number of foreign and domestic guest nights went down. During 2002, the number of guest nights at Norwegian holiday dwellings amounted to 18 000, a decrease of 8 per cent from December 2001. The number of Norwegian guest nights increased by 13 per cent, while the foreign market increased by 29 per cent.
