Fewer guest nights in January

The number of guest nights at Norwegian collective accommodation establishments decreased by 8 per cent, from 1.175 millions in January last year to 1.082 millions in January 2003. The domestic demand decreased by 6 per cent, while the foreign demand decreased by 15 per cent.

The number of guest nights at holiday dwellings increased, while the hotels, camping sites and Hostelling International Norway experienced a decrease. Some of the larger holiday dwellings were earlier categorized as hotels. These establishments are now categorized as the holiday dwellings.

Less Danish guest nights in January

Denmark was the largest foreign market in January 2003, with 106 000 guest nights at all collective accommodation establishments. Danish guest nights decreased by 18 per cent, compared with January 2002. The Danish stayed more at holiday dwellings and hostels. Sweden was second largest market Swedish guest nights decreased by 24 per cent.

Hotels dominate

January is off-season in Norway, particularly for the camping sites and holiday dwellings. In January 2003, 88 per cent of the total guest nights were at hotels. More details are given in the figure below.
