Number of guest nights down 12 per cent

The number of guest nights at Norwegian collective accommodation establishments decreased by 12 per cent, from 1.8 million in March last year to 1.6 million in March this year. The domestic demand decreased by 12 per cent, while the foreign demand went down by 10 per cent.

The number of guest nights at holiday dwellings increased, while the hotels, camping sites and Hostelling International Norway experienced a decrease. One reason for this is that some of the larger holiday dwellings were earlier incorrectly categorised as hotels.

Decline for camping sites

The number of guest night at camping sites decreased by 42 per cent compared with March last year. Easter took place in March last year, and April this year. This might be one reason for the decline.

Less guest nights from the Nordic market

The Nordic market (Norway excl) has 54 per cent of the total foreign demand. The three largest Nordic countries went down, while the number of guest nights from Iceland increased. The number of guest nights from Denmark decreased by 14 per cent, while Sweden decreased by 22 per cent compared with March last year.

Norwegians dominate

Three out of four guest nights were by Norwegians. The camping sites had 89 per cent Norwegian guest nights, while Holiday dwelling had 56 per cent.

Hotels dominate

In March 2003, 86 per cent of the total guest nights were at hotels and 10 per cent were at camping sites.

Decrease also in Sweden

Swedish accommodation establishments recorded 2.3 millions guest night in March this year, a decrease of 1 per cent compared with March last year. The second largest foreign market, Norway decreased.
