Fewer guest nights in hotels

The number of guest nights in Norwegian hotels decreased by 2 per cent in May 2004 compared with May last year. The number of nights spent in hotels by Norwegians decreased by 5 per cent, whereas the figure increased by 9 per cent for foreign visitors.

The United Kingdom was the largest foreign market in May, and the number of guest nights for this group increased by 2 per cent compared with May last year. The number of guest nights by visitors from the second largest foreign market, Germany, went down, whereas the number of guest nights by visitors from the third largest market, the USA, increased by 9 per cent.

Lower room rates and lodging revenues

The average room rate in May was NOK 696 compared with NOK 719 in May last year. The lodging turnover fell from NOK 556 millions in May last year to NOK 523 millions in May this year.

Falling occupancy rate

Compared with May last year, the occupancy rate for both rooms and beds dropped.

First five months

In the first five months of 2004, the number of guest nights in Norwegian hotels was 5.8 million. This is an increase of 4 per cent compared with the same period last year.

1.69 million guest nights

In May, the number of guest nights at Norwegian accommodation establishments was 1.69 million, an increase of 5 per cent compared with May last year.

From May 2004, the accommodation statistics for hotels and similar establishments, camping sites and holiday dwellings will be published together.
