3 700 guest nights in October

In October 2010 there were 3 700 guest nights in the collective accommodation establishments on Svalbard. Also in October, 18 per cent of the guest nights were foreign.

So far this year, there has been 73 000 guest nights in total, where 21 000 were foreign guest nights. See figure 1 for monthly variations.

Guest nights, by purpose of the stay and month. 2010

About 45 per cent of the guest nights were reported as holiday being the purpose of their stay in October; a share that varies from 30 per cent in September to 81 per cent in May.

The major monthly variation in number of guest nights and minor variation in capacity imply major variations in occupancy rates. In January, 11 per cent of beds and 19 per cent of bedrooms were occupied by guests, and in August the corresponding figures were 49 and 69 per cent respectively. In October, 21 per cent of the beds and 43 per cent of the rooms were occupied with guests.

Revenue per rented room was NOK 940, and has been stable so far this year. On the other hand, revenue per available room has major monthly variations, due to the variation in occupancy rates.

Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR)

RevPAR is an important key figure and is defined as lodging revenue (exclusive of meals) divided by number of available rooms. RevPAR expresses potential profit and is an indication of the management’s ability to convert available rooms to income.
