Less guest nights in October

There were close to 3 600 guest nights in the collective accommodation establishments on Svalbard in October, which is 4 per cent lower than for the same period last year.

There were more Norwegian guest nights but less foreign guest nights this October. There were almost 3 200 guest nights by Norwegian guests, which is an increase of 3 per cent from last October. Foreign guest nights decreased by more than 250 in the same period.

Growth in guest nights by holiday and recreational purposes

Guest nights by holiday and recreational purposes increased by 452 compared with October last year. Guest nights by course, conference and professional purposes were 630 fewer than the same period last year.

Less turnover realised this October than last

Lodging turnover went down from NOK 2.6 million in October 2010 to about NOK 2.2 million this October, which corresponds to a decrease of 15 per cent.

About the statistics’ basis

The statistics only cover guest nights of the commercial accommodation establishments in Longyearbyen, and not those in Barentsburg or other areas on Svalbard.

Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR)

RevPAR is an important key figure and is defined as lodging revenue (exclusive of meals) divided by number of available rooms. RevPAR expresses potential profit and is an indication of the management’s ability to convert available rooms to income.
