Decrease in trips in 4th quarter 2015

Norwegians aged 16–79 took 4.1 million trips with at least one overnight stay during the 4th quarter of 2015; a decrease of 16 per cent compared with the 4th quarter of 2014. Domestic and outbound trips had a decrease of 18 and 12 per cent respectively.

About 2 million Norwegians aged 16–79 travelled in the 4th quarter of 2015; a decrease of 12 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Mostly city trips

Norwegians took 820 000 city trips in the 4th quarter of 2015, which is 9 per cent more than in the 4th quarter of 2015. While there were 610 000 outbound city trips in both the last quarter of 2015 and the last quarter of 2014, there were 210 000 or 50 per cent more domestic city trips.

Hotels used in business and outbound trips

Eighty per cent of business trips and 65 per cent of outbound trips entailed the use of a hotel in the 4th quarter of 2015. Private accommodation was most popular in both domestic and holiday trips, with 56 and 53 per cent respectively.

Fewer trips but higher expenditure in 2015

Norwegians took 22.5 million trips with at least one overnight stay in 2015; a decrease of 9 per cent. We took 13.8 domestic trips and 8.8 million outbound trips; a decrease of 11 and 5 per cent respectively. We spent a total of NOK 157.9 billion on these trips in 2015, which is an increase of 3.3 per cent compared with 2014.

The travel survey is carried out among 2 000 Norwegians between 16 and 79 years of age. A new sample is drawn every quarter.

The uncertainty calculated with 95 per cent certainty for the 4th quarter of 2015 is:

• Number of trips: Published value NOK 4.1 million. Interval: NOK 3.8 million to NOK 4.5 million

• Guest nights: Published NOK 20.3 million. Interval: NOK 19.4 million to NOK 21.2 million

• Tourist expenditure: Published value NOK 29.5 billion. Interval: NOK 26.3 billion to NOK 32.7 billion
