Positive development for ocean transport in 2014

In 2014, the operating profit for ocean transport increased by 13 per cent from the year before to NOK 19.9 billion. The operating margin constituted 14 per cent in 2014, compared with 13 per cent in 2013.

Figures for ocean transport are reported by enterprises within the industry sub-classes of Passenger ocean transport, Freight ocean transport, Tugs, and Supply and other sea transport offshore services. Total gross freights, including commission and management fees, for vessels in foreign going trade constituted NOK 144.6 billion in 2014, compared with NOK 131.8 billion in 2013. 

Bareboat freights had largest increase

Bareboat freights from Norwegian charterers went up sharply by 96 per cent to NOK 4.4 billion in 2014. In the same period, foreign time charterers and voyage freights increased by 25 and 9 per cent respectively. The income from liner goods freights rose by 26 per cent, to NOK 16.3 billion in 2014. 

Growth in bulk transport

The freight income from bulk vessels increased by 32 per cent from the previous year to NOK 24.4 billion in 2014. General cargo vessels had a 10 per cent income growth in the same period, reaching NOK 32.5 billion in 2014. Tankers had a reduction in freights by 14 per cent. 

Increased bunkers and other voyage-dependent costs

Total gross freights increased by 10 per cent in the period, and total operating costs rose by 9 per cent, reaching NOK 124.8 billion in 2014. In 2014, bunker costs and other voyage-dependent costs increased by 5 and 17 per cent respectively from the year before. Costs for renting manned foreign vessels rose by 24 per cent, to NOK 14.3 billion, while Norwegian vessel rentals fell by 3 per cent to NOK 4.9 billion during the same period. In total, bareboat rentals decreased by 34 per cent. 

Growth for coastal traffic

In 2014, the turnover for coastal water traffic was NOK 11.9 billion, compared with NOK 10.8 billion in 2013, which corresponds to an increase of 11 per cent. Domestic freight transport and car ferry services had the biggest growth in turnover in 2014, with increases of 31 and 7 per cent respectively from the previous year. Income for domestic passenger transport fell by almost NOK 800 million compared with 2013.
