Reduced gross freights in Norwegian foreign going trade
In 2002, Norwegian shipping companies in foreign going trade earned gross freights of NOK 87.6 billion compared to NOK 99.2 billion in 2001, a decline of 11.7 per cent.
The operating survey for vessels in foreign going trade was revised in 2001 and includes enterprises in the subclasses ocean transport and ship brokerage services. Further information can be found in About the statistics.
In 2002, voyage freights and contracts of affreightment amounted to 29 per cent and 24 per cent of gross freights respectively. Voyage freights declined by 28.2 per cent to NOK 25.2 billion, while contract of affreightment increased by 13.3 per cent to NOK 21 billion. Bareboat freights and timecharter from Norwegian charterers declined by 14 per cent, while bareboat freights and timecharter from foreign charterers declined by 1.1 per cent.
Operating costs were reduced by 8.2 per cent to NOK 74.7 billion. Whereas voyage-dependent costs increased by 8.9 per cent, bunker costs decreased by 25 per cent.
The profitability of the Norwegian foreign going trade was reduced compared with 2001. The operating profit for 2002 was reduced by 27.7 per cent, and the operating margin fell from 18 per cent to 14.7 per cent.
