Growth for hotels and restaurants

The index of hotels and restaurants increased by 2.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2004 compared with the first quarter of 2003. The turnover of hotels increased by 3.5 per cent, while the turnover of restaurants increased by 3.3 per cent.

Increased railway transport

The index of land and pipeline transport decreased by 0.9 per cent from the first quarter of 2003 to the first quarter of 2004. The turnover of railway transport increased by 5.2 per cent while the turnover of other land transport increased by 1.6 per cent. Transport via pipelines had a 6.9 per cent decrease in turnover in the same period.

Continued increase for water transport

The water transport industry experienced an increase in turnover of 20.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2004 compared with the first quarter of 2003. The turnover of ocean transport increased by 20.5 per cent, while the turnover of domestic maritime transport1 increased by 15.9 per cent. Air transport had a 0.8 per cent decrease in turnover.

Businesses involved in supporting and auxiliary transport activities and travel agency activities experienced a decrease of 0.7 per cent in the same period. Cargo handling and storage had a 12.9 per cent increase in turnover, while the turnover of other supporting transport activities decreased by 1 per cent. The turnover of travel agencies, tour operators and tourist assistance activities decreased by 6.1 per cent. For other transport agencies the turnover increased by 3.7 per cent.

Small increase for post and telecommunications

The turnover of businesses in post and telecommunications increased by 0.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2004 compared with the first quarter of 2003. Both post and courier activities had higher turnover. The turnover of telecommunications increased by 0.4 per cent, and so did turnover in radio and television activities.
