Tougher times for transport

Figures for the first quarter of 2009 reveal that most industries in the transport sector were impacted by the financial crisis, showing either a decline or a reduced growth in turnover.

Turnover grew in total by 1.3 per cent for the section Transportation and storage from the first quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009, thereby maintaining the negative trend from the second half of last year. For instance, establishments in the group Freight transport by road and removal services experienced a drop in turnover of 1.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter in 2008. This drop in turnover can be explained by a decrease in the volume of goods transported, as prices increased in the same period (see our price indices for transport and storage ).

Reduced turnover for hotels

The tourism industry is also experiencing difficult times. Turnover for establishments offering accommodation decreased in total by 7.5 per cent between the first quarter of 2008 and the corresponding quarter of 2009, a drop consistent with a reduction in the number of guest nights (see our Accommodation statistics ). However, turnover increased for food and beverage service activities.

Growth for telecommunications

The information and communications industries increased their combined turnover by 5.0 per cent from the first quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009. Turnover increased, for instance, for telecommunications and computer programming, consultancy and related activities, even without an increase in the prices of such services (see our price indices for information and communication ). Publishing, programming and broadcasting activities, in contrast, experienced a decrease in turnover during the same period.

Change of industry classification

The turnover index is, as of the first quarter of 2009, published according to a new industry classification (SN2007). This classification results in a number of changes to the index. For example, the old section I (Transport, storage and communication) has been divided into two sections, H (Transportation and storage) and J (Information and communication). In addition, the index has expanded to include industries not previously covered (e.g. publishing activities and information service activities). Read more about the transition to SN2007 here .

Reorganisation of public transport

Figures for 2008 in NACE 49.3 and NACE 52.2 are not directly comparable to previous years due to a reorganisation of public transport in Oslo and Akershus.
