A difficult year for hotels

Hotels and other establishments offering accommodation experienced a disappointing 2009, as turnover in this industry decreased in total by 5.2 per cent from 2008.

2009 was a particularly difficult year for hotels, where turnover fell by 5.8 per cent compared to 2008. Figures from our Accommodation statistics suggest that this decline in turnover was due to both fewer guest nights and reduced room prices. In contrast, turnover increased by 3.5 per cent for camping grounds, recreational vehicle parks and trailer parks from 2008 to 2009.

Lower turnover in transport

Last year was a struggle for several industries in the transportation sector. Turnover in the section "Transportation and storage" declined in total by 8.3 per cent in 2009 compared to 2008. The drop in turnover was most pronounced for water transport, and in particular freight transport by sea and coast.

No change for telecommunications

Growth in the telecommunications industry also stagnated in 2009, as turnover increased by only 0.1 per cent from 2008. However, most other information and communications industries reported a considerable decrease in turnover last year, as exemplified by a 6.5 per cent drop in publishing activities.

Continued decrease in 4th quarter

The negative trend continued in the last quarter of 2009. For instance, turnover for freight transport by road decreased by 8.2 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter in 2008. Likewise, the telecommunications industry experienced a drop in turnover of 1.9 per cent in the same period, attributable to a fall in prices (see our Price indices for information and communication ).

Preliminary figures

Figures for the 4th quarter are based on data for the month of October. Data for November and December are predicted using historical growth. Consequently, these figures are preliminary and subject to change.

Change of industry classification

The turnover index is, as of the first quarter of 2009, published according to a new industry classification (SIC2007). This classification results in a number of changes to the index. For example, the old section I (Transport, storage and communication) has been divided into two sections: H (Transportation and storage) and J (Information and communication). In addition, the index has expanded to include industries not previously covered (e.g., publishing activities and information service activities). Read more about the transition to SIC2007 here .

Reorganisation of public transport

Figures for 2008 in NACE 49.3 and NACE 52.2 are not directly comparable to previous years due to a reorganisation of public transport in Oslo and Akershus.
