Growth for freight transport by road
Freight transport by road continued to grow last year, as turnover increased by 8.6 per cent from 2010. Turnover decreased, however, for freight transport by rail.
Freight transport by road has now completely recovered from the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008. Establishments in this industry posted an all-time high of NOK 44 billion in turnover last year. 2011 was, however, a more difficult year for freight rail transport, where turnover dropped by 2.3 per cent from 2010.
Growth for tourism
Turnover increased across the board in the tourism industry last year. Establishments offering food and beverage service activities increased their turnover by 7.7 per cent from 2010 to 2011. Likewise, turnover grew by 7.9 per cent last year for hotels and similar accommodation, reflected in an increase in the number of guest nights reported by these establishments (see our Accommodation statistics ).
Upturn for ICT
2011 was also a good year for the ICT sector, where turnover increased in total by 4.7 per cent from 2010. Growth was particularly strong for establishments offering computer programming, consultancy and related activities, who experienced an increase in turnover of 13 per cent last year. However, turnover decreased in the telecommunications industry, albeit only by 1.3 per cent.
Strong quarter for passenger transport
The 4th quarter of 2011 showed solid figures for different modes of passenger transport. Turnover increased for instance by 6.6 per cent for passenger air transport from the corresponding quarter of 2010, despite a sustained period of reduced prices for airline tickets (see our Price indices for transport and storage ). Turnover also grew in the 4th quarter for sea and coastal passenger water transport, whereas passenger rail transport (interurban) experienced a drop in turnover towards the end of the year.
Preliminary figuresFigures for the 4th quarter are based on data for the month of October. Data for November and December are predicted using historical growth. Consequently, these figures are preliminary and subject to change. |
