The tail wind for rail transport continues

Almost 211 million passengers travelled by rail in 2013. This was an increase of 10 million passengers from 2012.

3The data source for scheduled road transport (buses and coaches) has been changed as from 2010. This cause a brake in the time series (see “About the statistics” for supplementary comments).

The number of passengers travelling by suburban railways and urban tramways constitutes about two thirds of all passenger transport by rail. A comparison of passenger kilometres , however, shows that the corresponding share is reduced to one fifth. In the period 1998-2007, the number of passengers using suburban railways and urban tramways was quite stable. Since 2007, the number of passengers using these means of transport has increased by almost 40 million to 144 million in 2013. The number of passengers travelling by train is also increasing, especially in 2013 with more than 4.5 million passengers compared to 2012. Almost 67 million passengers travelled by train in 2013.

Traffic by private cars, as normal

The total transport work performed came to 75.3 billion passenger kilometres in 2013 and 5.3 billion journeys were carried out. The private cars constituted 78 and 82 per cent respectively. The growth in traffic by private car was slightly more than 1 per cent from 2012, which is the same as the average increase for the last five years.

More tonnes transported but reduced tonnes-kilometres

The transport work performed by rail constituted 2.3 billion tonnes-kilometres in 2013, and 9.7 million tonnes were transported. This was a decrease of 7 per cent and an increase of 3 per cent respectively. The average length of transport was thereby reduced by almost 30 kilometres in 2013 to 242 kilometres. This must be viewed against the growth in the number of new rail goods operators in recent years. For these operators, the average length of a journey is about 100 kilometres, i.e. a quarter of the average when the main operator is doing the transporting.
