Stable growth for the road goods transport

During 2000 Norwegian lorries carried 270 million tonnes. The domestic transport work by these lorries constituted 13.5 billion ton-kilometres or 48 per cent of the transport performances in total.

Compared with 1999, the lorry transport increased by 5 per cent measured in ton-kilometres and by 2 per cent measured in tonnes carried.

Domestic goods transport increased 0.5 per cent

A total of 448 million tonnes of goods were transported in 2000, an increase of 0.5 per cent from 1999. The transport work was however slightly reduced to 48.8 billion ton-kilometres. The transport performances in 2000 on the Norwegian mainland totalled 352 million tonnes and 28.1 billion ton-kilometres respectively.

The transport of oil and gas from the Continental shelf to the Norwegian refineries constituted 96 million tonnes and almost 21 billion ton-kilometres. Compared with 1999, the decrease in ton-kilometres was insignificant while the decrease measured in tons transported was almost 5 per cent. The oil transport by pipelines constituted almost 3.5 billion ton-kilometres in 2000 while the transport performances by oil-tankers were 13.0 billion ton-kilometres. In addition 4.2 billion ton-kilometres are performed in connection with gas transport by pipeline.

Domestic passenger transport increased 1.5 per cent

The domestic passenger transport increased by 1.5 per cent and constituted 4.3 billion passengers transported in 2000. The private cars dominate the passenger transport. 3.4 billion private journeys were made by private cars. This was 80 per cent of the total passenger transport. Also when the performance is measured in passenger kilometres, the private car is dominating with a share of 74 per cent or 46.7 billion passenger kilometres. Motorcycles were the mode of transport with the highest increase in the transport performances, 14.9 per cent (passengers) and 6.5 per cent (passenger kilometres) respectively.

Longest travels with private cars

The average Norwegian travelled 38.5 kilometres per day in 2000. This is almost 10 times more than in 1946 and more than the double distance since 1970. The use of private cars is the main reason for the growth in the mobility. In 2000, each Norwegian travelled about 28.5 km per day in average with private cars, i.e. 75 per cent of the total distance travelled per day.
