Headwind for the air transport
9.2 million passengers travelled by air in 2001, a decrease of 9 per cent or 1 million passengers. The transport work decreased from 4.4 billion passenger kilometres in 2000 to 4.1 billion in 2001.
The growth in passenger traffic by air has been stable since 1946 except for a couple of years with minor decreases. The previous decrease was in 1989. The reduction in passenger kilometres was 79 million that year compared with 295 million in 2001. Even though there has been a decrease in the air traffic through the whole year, the decrease is more obvious in the three latest months of 2001.
The private car dominates
The passenger transport increased by 2.1 per cent from 2000 to 4.4 billion journeys in 2001. 3.5 billion, or 80 per cent of all journeys, were made by car. The average length of the journey is somewhat shorter for the private cars compared with the average figure for the other modes of transport. This is why the private car "only" constitutes 75 per cent of the total of 47.9 billion passenger kilometres.
159 million passengers travelled by rail (train, suburban railways and urban tramways) in 2001. This was an increase of 1 million passengers or 0.5 per cent from 2000.
Almost 40 kilometres daily
The average Norwegian travelled 38.5 kilometres per day in 2001. We drove 29 kilometres by private car each day on average, an increase of 9 kilometres since 1980. The daily average length of journey by rail and maritime transport has not changed much since 1946. For the air transport however there has been a considerable increase. Only in the last twenty years each Norwegian has increased the length of journey by 150 per cent on average.
The statistics "Domestic transport performances" is published yearly and normally comprise the domestic transport of goods. Due to insufficient data this part of the statistics is postponed to the autumn of 2002.
