Transport work by lorry comprised 16.1 billion tonne-kilometres in 2009; a decrease of 8.3 per cent from 2008. The total passenger transport increased by 0.8 per cent to 72.9 billion passenger kilometres in 2009.

The transport of goods by lorry reached a peak in 2008. A total of 301 million tonnes were transported in this year and transport performances come to 17.6 billion tonne-kilometres. Maritime transport also experiences a decline

With regard to transport by lorry, transport at sea experienced a positive trend at the beginning of the 21st century including 2008. In this year, the transport performances constituted 16.3 billion tonne-kilometres. However, as with road transport, maritime transport also experienced tighter economic frames in 2009. The decrease came to 3 per cent; 18.8 billion tonne-kilometres.

Lower growth in traffic by private cars

The statistics show an average increase of about 2.5 per cent in both the number of travels and the corresponding transport work. In 2009 the increase was reduced to 1 per cent corresponding to 4.2 billion travels and 56.5 billion passenger kilometres.

118 million travels by suburban railways and urban tramways

After weak passenger figures in the early part of the 21st century, traffic by suburban railways and urban tramways experienced a recovery resulting in 118 million travels in 2009. This was an increase compared to 2008 and 2004 by 3 per cent and 30 per cent respectively. These modes of transport constituted 67 per cent of all travels by rail but not more than 16 per cent of the total transport work by rail. Transport by railway was somewhat reduced in 2009.
