Subsidies remain main source of income
In 2006, state subsidies accounted for 69 per cent of the total operating income of private schools eligible for such subsidies. This is a decrease of 2 percentage points from 2005.
Sales income, mainly from tuition fees, accounted for 19 per cent of total operating income in 2006. This is a slight decrease of 2 percentage points from 2005. The 194 schools in the survey eligible for state subsidies had total operating income of approximately NOK 2 billion divided between NOK 824 million for compulsory schools and NOK 1.2 billion for upper secondary schools.
Income and costs almost equal
Among schools eligible for state subsidies, labour costs accounted for 54 per cent of total operating costs, up from 51 per cent in 2005. Total labour costs amounted to more than NOK 1 billion divided between NOK 496 million in compulsory schools and NOK 552 million in upper secondary schools. Total operating costs for all schools amounted to slightly more than NOK 1.9 billion, about the same as total operating income.
Schools in the survey
The results above refer to the 194 private schools in the survey eligible for state subsidies. 29 schools not eligible for such subsidies are also included in the survey. Total operating income for the latter group amounted to NOK 300 million in 2006.
