Small increase in sales income for private schools

From 2007 to 2008, sales income increased by 2 percentage points for private schools eligible for state subsidies.

State subsidies accounted for 69 per cent of total operating income in 2008, the same as in 2006 and 2007. The 278 schools in the survey had a total running income of approximately NOK 4.9 billion, divided between NOK 2.8 billion for schools eligible for state subsidies and NOK 2.1 billion for schools not eligible for such subsidies.

Income on par with costs

Among schools eligible for state subsidies, labour costs accounted for 52 per cent of total operating costs, compared with 53 per cent in 2007. Total operating costs for all private schools in the survey amounted to slightly more than NOK 4.8 billion, about the same as total running income. Among schools eligible for state subsidies, labour costs amounted to NOK 1.5 billion. For the other private schools labour costs added up to NOK 900 millions.

The results above refer to the 204 private schools in the survey eligible for state subsidies and 74 schools not eligible for such subsidies. The former are lower and upper secondary schools, whereas the latter also comprise tertiary institutions.
