Increase in banks’ gross external debt

Norway's gross external debt amounted to NOK 3 861 billion at the end of the fourth quarter 2008; an increase of NOK 938 billion from the end of 2007. The growth throughout 2008 was mainly caused by higher debt for banks.

Gross external debt by 3rd quarter 2008 and 4th quarter 2008 in NOK billion.

Norway’s gross external debt increased from NOK 2 923 billion in the fourth quarter 2007 to NOK

3 861 billion in the fourth quarter 2008. The banks increased their debt by NOK 503 billion from the end of the fourth quarter 2007 to the end of the fourth quarter 2008. The banks had the largest share of foreign debt with NOK 1 544 billion, which was 40 per cent of Norway’s total foreign debt at the end of the fourth quarter 2008. The overall increase in the banks’ debt was mainly due to higher short-term foreign debt. The external debt of “other sectors” made up 28 per cent of Norway’s total foreign debt and amounted to NOK 1 098 billion. The general government had a share of 23 per cent.

The statistics include the sectors general government, Norges Bank, banks and “other sectors”, which include non-bank financial enterprises, non-financial enterprises, households and non-profit institutions serving households. Inter-company lending between entities in a direct investment relationship is shown separately. Shares, participations and other equity capital are not included in external debt.
