High Trade Surplus in 1999

Norway exported goods for 345 billion kroner in 1999, of which exports of crude oil and natural gas amounted to 161 billion. Last years import came to 253 billion kroner. The trade surplus was as high as 91 billion kroner, whereas in 1998 it was 31 billion.

Adjusted for seasonality, the value of exports of traditional commodities showed an increase of 5.9 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter last year. During the same period the traditional imports increased by 4.5 per cent.

The Norwegian exports of crude oil were 132.4 billion last year, compared with 91.1 billion in 1998, an increase of 45.3 per cent. The export volume of crude oil was slightly lower; 958 billion barrels against 981 billion barrels in 1998. The average, estimated export price for 1999 was 138 kroner per barrel, compared with 92 kroner in 1998.Last year the average price per barrel has risen from 80 to 200 kroner.

Looking at the exports of traditional goods to our main trade partners, the figures for Japan and USA have increased the most. Our exports to Japan have increased from 6.2 billion kroner in 1998 to 8.2 billion (+33,7 per cent) last year. The exports to USA in 1999 came to 14.7 billion kroner, and this is 2.0 billion more than the previous year.

The figures are exclusive of ships and oil platforms.
