Increase in Exports of Traditional Goods

Norway exported crude oil and natural gas for 23.8 billion kroner in May and traditional goods for 18.2 billion, an increase of 31.7 per cent from May last year for the traditional goods. The trade surplus amounted to 17.6 billion kroner.

Adjusted for seasonality, the value of external trade in goods showed an increase in exports of 5 per cent for the three-month period from March to May compared with the previous three-month period. The imports increased by 0.3 per cent. Comparing the seasonally adjusted figures for May and April, the exports increased by 3.3 per cent and the imports by 7.5 per cent.

The accumulated trade surplus for January through May was 82.7 billion kroner, compared with 17.6 billion during the same period last year.

The export volume of crude oil in the five-month period from January to May was 429 million barrels, up from 384 million barrels in the first five months of 1999. The estimated average export price for May 2000 was 254 kroner per barrel, compared with 115 kroner in May 1999.

Among important commodity groups showing high growth rates of the values for the month of May compared with the same month last year are products of mineral oil and gases. They increased 70 per cent. Non-ferrous metals increased 53 per cent, chemicals 41 per cent, pulp and paper 34 per cent and fish increased 25 per cent.

The figures are exclusive of ships and mobile oil platforms, the same as traditional goods on the import side. For exports, traditional goods are also exclusive of crude oil and natural gas.
